In my third week at Loganberry, I worked on two major (as in
larger and more time-consuming than the other tasks I was doing around the
store, but neither were actually that large) projects. The first major project
I worked on was a book club meeting with a staff member named Miranda. Miranda
recently graduated from Case Western with a degree in psychology, and she works
at Loganberry managing their young adult (YA) and African American sections,
and she also maintains the Loganberry social media pages. As a part of YA, she
runs a book club called not YA average book club (a pun), for high school
students. The book club meets once a month and has a good handful of regular
participants considering that it was started recently. The book for May was Legendborn, a novel by Tracy Deon.
Legendborn, which is “a modern day twist on Arthurian legend", and “it
follows a Black teenage girl who discovers a secret historically white magic
society while attending a UNC-Chapel Hill residential pre-college program” [1]. It was an enjoyable read
as the writing was very good, the characters were well developed, and the plot
was suspenseful. I read the book and helped Miranda to plan the meeting. We
used the list of activities she normally includes in her book clubs, ice
breakers about the book and the characters, short games, and discussion
questions. The book club meeting itself went very well and we had a fun
discussion about the book with the girls who showed up. Unfortunately, it was
over zoom because of COVID precautions, but it will likely start back up in
person soon. Tracy Deon also just turned in her second draft of the sequel,
which means that the advanced readers' copy should be out soon. Advanced readers' copies are the drafts of new books before they are published, which get sent
out to booksellers and journalists to try to generate support for the book
before it is published. Loganberry gets tons of ARCs, so I hope to be able to
read the sequel’s ARC as soon as it comes out.
