The second larger project I worked on was an interview of an author. June is national cancer survivor month. In honor, Loganberry interviewed three authors who are all cancer survivors who wrote books about their experience. Miesha, the staff member in charge of the event asked if I wanted to interview one of the authors because she was very busy. I interviewed a woman named Christine Shields Corrigan about her memoir, Again: Surviving Cancer Twice with Love and Lists. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 49, and she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when she was a teenager. Her book is about her experience battling cancer as an adult, through surgery and chemotherapy, and it also reflects on her experience having cancer as a teenager. The book also includes after each chapter, a short section of advice relevant to the topic of the chapter, for people who are going through cancer treatment themselves. I interviewed her on Monday the seventh, and I think the livestream is on Loganberry’s Facebook. The interview’s intended purpose, beyond Facebook, is to go into a podcast combining the interviews with all three authors. I really enjoyed interviewing Christine. It was a new experience for me as I have never interviewed an author in this capacity before. I also tried to develop questions that not only were interesting to listen to in the podcast, but were things I was genuinely curious about having read her book. I thought it was very interesting to get a sort of behind the scenes peak at her book and learn about how her thinking and reflections influences her work as an author. The book also deals with themes of femininity and identity, and it was interesting to hear her discuss those topics in the interview as well. It was an insightful experience that I enjoyed, and I think the skills I gained from it will be useful in the future.

  (I checked my blog today while working on week 2 blog posts and saw that my blog posts 2 and 3 did not upload correctly because of the pictures, so I am reuploading them.)  Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of my first week at Loganberry, (I had the AP Latin exam on Friday), I worked on lots of organizational tasks. The back room in the store is called “Lit Arts”, literature arts, and it is where the fiction, historical fiction, literary criticism, mystery, horror, romance, poetry, theatre, comic book /graphic novel/manga, and young adult sections are located. I started by shelving about 100 books in the poetry section, which was a considerable task because the shelves are overflowing! I also reorganized their poetry table to look a bit more organized.   In my third week at Loganberry, I worked on two major (as in larger and more time-consuming than the other tasks I was doing around the store, but neither were actually that large) projects. The first major project I worked on was a book club meeting with a staff member named Miranda. Miranda recently graduated from Case Western with a degree in psychology, and she works at Loganberry managing their young adult (YA) and African American sections, and she also maintains the Loganberry social media pages. As a part of YA, she runs a book club called not YA average book club (a pun), for high school students. The book club meets once a month and has a good handful of regular participants considering that it was started recently. The book for May was Legendborn , a novel by Tracy Deon. Blog #1- Pre-Project

My name is Claire Marrie, and for my project, I am volunteering at Loganberry Bookstore. Loganberry is on Larchmere Boulevard in Shaker/Cleveland. It is independent and locally owned. They sell all sorts of books, new, used, half-off, local authors, and more. The store is cozy but packed to the seams with shelves from floor to ceiling. They collect rare and old books, with some titles that are centuries old. There are a few reasons I wanted to do this project. First, I wanted to give back to the community by volunteering at a local small business or foundation. Loganberry is not only locally owned, but they are proud to be. They host many events that support local art and culture, as well as social justice. I also wanted to do this project because I wanted to meet and interact with new people after more than a year of COVID.
